You can apply online via the natis.gov.za website. The online service is part of the Department of Transport’s move towards Driving Licence Card Accounts (DLCA) as it aims to leave paper-based processing behind completely by 2025.

Currently, if you are based in the Western Cape, you can process your licence renewal online through e-Services. Note that it’s best to use a desktop or laptop, as the system is not fully mobile friendly yet. As we explained in our article on car licence online renewal fees, the amount you need to pay for licence renewal depends on your car’s mass and what province you’re in.

  • To do so, you will need a proof of residence – e.g. utility account with your name on it.
  • As well as a copy of your ID. Once you’ve completed the online registration form, you will upload your documents.

Via the Natis platform and e-Services, the application process takes between three to five working days for new applicants and two working days for applicants who are already registered. You will receive banking details, information on the payment deadline and a deposit reference number via email.

From there you simply make an EFT via online banking with your specific deposit reference number included.

HOW DO I GET MY LICENCE DISC?

Government wants you to do your car licence online one month prior to the expiry date. It may take as long as fourteen working days for the transaction to be processed after payment has been received.

The South African Postal Service will then deliver the licence disc to your listed postal address. However, there may be unforeseen delays on the post office side, so best plan ahead and give yourself extra time.

MAKE AN ONLINE APPOINTMENT

It’s not fully digital like the above, but another way to avoid queues is to book a slot online before you visit a licence centre in person. Not all branches offer this functionality just yet, as they implement it in a phased approach, but you can see which centres offer this service in the Western Cape HERE.
