Thank goodness the days of interminably long queues are behind us; assuming you’re happy to pay a little extra for digital convenience. The process to renew your vehicle licence online in 2024 is easier than ever if you make sure you do the following …
VEHICLE LICENCE ONLINE IN 2024
Believe it or now, the government is actually doing a decent job to assist you with the renewal of your vehicle licence online in 2024. I just received notifications by email for the vehicles I’m due to licence next month from the National Traffic Information System or eNATIS. It also reminded me that I have a 21-day grace period after the expiry date on my discs.
So, how can you renew your vehicle licence online in 2024 and, more importantly, what documents do you need to make the process quick and easy? Firstly, register on the eNATIS portal if you have not already. You will need to submit proof of residence (ie. a utility account with your name on it, not older than three months) and a copy of your ID.
COMPLETE THE APPLICATION
Once you’re loaded on the system, select the option to Renew Vehicle Licence online and simply supply the necessary information as prompted. This includes your vehicle licence renewal notice (MVL2) if you received one (like the one I received via email). If you don’t have one of those you will have to complete an ALV (Application for Licensing of Motor Vehicle) form. In some cases, you may have to supply the NCP form (Notification of Change of Particulars), too.

Then you will be sent banking details for the amount you need to pay to settled your licence renewal online in 2024. Note that the cost of the licence renewal is separate to that of the eNATIS service and delivery fee. We’ve done a detailed breakdown of all the associated costs HERE.
REFERENCE NUMBER
The system will send you a specific deposit reference number unique to your application either via email or SMS. Along with it will be a date by which you must pay to complete your vehicle licence renewal online. Of course, if you miss this date, you’ll have to start all over again. And don’t forget to include your deposit reference number when making the payment.

Once transacted, how long does it take to receive your new licence disc? Through eNATIS it takes anywhere between three to five working days to be processed. It will then be delivered to your registered postal address. If you experience delays at this point you can get in touch with eNATIS at +27 861 400 800 or email: onlinesupport@rtmc.co.za.
OTHER SERVICES
You can also renew your driving licence card, book a learner’s, driver’s or professional driver’s permit licence test and even report a crash for insurance purposes on eNATIS. There is an equivalent online portal at capetown.gov called e-Services which offers broadly the same services but only for residents in the Western Cape.
