CAN anyone apply for a SASSA Old-Age Grant on your behalf?
Many elderly people struggling to make ends meet in 2024 may need someone to apply for a SASSA Old-Age Grant on their behalf. But can they?
Administered by the South African Social Security Agency, a SASSA Old-Age Grant helps protect the elderly in their later years. However, there are a number of requirements to be able receive a SASSA Old-Age Grant, and many ask if someone can apply on their behalf.

In case you were unaware, the SASSA Old-Age Grant caters for citizens, permanent residents and refugees who are 60-years of age or older. We’ll get into the long list of requirements to qualify a little later, but the good news is someone else is allowed to apply for a SASSA Old-Age Grant on your behalf.
SASSA OLD-AGE GRANT IN 2024
According to the Gov.za website, if you are too old or sick to travel to a SASSA branch office or satellite office to apply, a family member or friend may apply on your behalf.

They will have to take a letter from you and/or a doctor saying why you cannot visit the SASSA office in person. You must also complete THIS affidavit that will accompany your application. A SASSA official must be in attendance at all times during the application on your behalf.
WHO QUALIFIES FOR AN OLD-AGE PENSION?
- Only those permanently residing in South Africa qualify.
- Those with verifiable identification document (ID).
- You cannot receive any another social grant.
- Be 60-years of age or older.
- Not be in any state care institution.
- You cannot have more than R1 227 600-worth of assets against your name.
- If married, you must not have more than R2 455 200 in your name.
- Annually you cannot earn more than R86 280 if single.
- Each year you cannot earn more than R172 560 if married.

HOW MUCH IS THE MONTHLY PAYOUT?
As of Sunday 1 October 2023, the SASSA Old-Age Grant increased to R2 090 per person, for anyone between 60- and 74-years old. R2 110 per month goes to anyone over 75 years of age. This is an increase of R10.

Ensure that the person you’re applying on behalf of gives you the following certified documents (including copies):
- Verifiable identification document.
- Proof of your marital status, if applicable.
- A discharge certificate from your last employer or Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) if previously employed.
- Proof of dividends or income.
- Proof of address.
- Three-months bank statement.
- Proof of all your assets and properties in your possession.
