According to GroundUp, days later and thousands of SASSA Children’s Grants in January 2024 are still to be honoured. To add insult to injury, many of the affected have had their grants suspended for no reason at all, seemingly as a result of a ‘technical glitch’ in the New Year.

At last count, SASSA’s child grants looked like this:

  • 13.2 million receive R510 each month for the SASSA Child Support Grant.
  • 274 000 receive the R1 130 SASSA Foster Child Grant.
  • 157 000 receive the SASSA Child Care Dependency Grant of R2 090.

This equates to a staggering 65% of children in South Africa receiving government grant money in some shape or form.

SASSA says grants are regularly suspended each month due to recipients failing the bank verification process. However, others in civil society believe ‘system errors’ were at fault in delays to paying of grants this month.

GroundUp reports that it is unclear whether recipients will receive their money before the next payment run in February (due on Tuesday 6 February 2024). This is a bad time considering children have to go back to school and parents have to buy food, textbooks and stationery.
