SASSA: WHY APPLY FOR A SOCIAL GRANT?

The SASSA Act of 2004 stipulates that all South Africans who pass the necessary means tests are entitled to a social grant.

Social grants exist to reduce social pressure, and to cater to problems that affect the social system. If you don’t have money for food or an education, it can be the state’s responsibility to provide you with it.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR A SOCIAL GRANT?

If you would like to apply for a social grant, the first thing you should do is contact a regional office – or visit the official website for social grant services.

Applications are usually done in writing, subject to a means test which assesses your needs and income so that a grant can be approved.

If you are unsure, contact the social security agency’s hotline or visit a regional office.
