The SASSA Basic Income Grant might actually become a reality for underprivileged South Africans. Here’s what we know.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is the government’s social grant agency. More than 18 million social grants pay to South African recipients, including Disability Grants, R350-SRD Grants, and Older Persons (Pensioners) Grants. South Africans have been awaiting the possibility of a SASSA Basic Income Grant for a long time.

Initial announcements were made as far back as before COVID.

SASSA BASIC INCOME GRANT: WHAT WE KNOW

The SASSA basic income grant could be the change South Africa needs.

If the Basic Income Grant is introduced, all citizens will have access to funds that help their lives. Job-seekers could have better opportunities – and South Africa’s poor might even eat.

We know that government is planning to introduce a Basic Income Grant.

Unfortunately, we don’t know when.

SASSA BASIC INCOME GRANT

Basic income grants could replace the R350-SRD grant.

The basic income grant could be available to all South Africans meeting the criteria. Unemployed persons can apply for the basic income grant when the time comes – and other grants, like Disability Grants, might be adjusted to compensate.

OTHER SASSA DATA

According to the social grant agency, gold cards stay valid for 2024 – and didn’t expire last year as previous announcements have said.

Postbank cash payments might be phased out later this year. By April 2024, grant recipients might have to rely on other means to get their grant.
