Flying with pets can be a challenging experience, but with some careful planning and preparation, you can make it a smoother process for both you and your fluffy friend. Here are six tips to remember when flying with pets…

RESEARCH AIRLINE POLICIES ON PETS

Different airlines have different policies regarding pet travel, including size restrictions, carrier specifications, and fees. Research and choose an airline that accommodates your pet’s needs and follows regulations.

VISIT THE VET

Schedule a visit to the vet well before your trip to ensure your pet is healthy and up-to-date on vaccinations. Ask for a health certificate, as many airlines require one issued within a specific timeframe before travel.

CHOOSE A SUITABLE PET CARRIER

Select a well-ventilated, airline-approved carrier that allows your furry companion to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. Familiarise him or her with the carrier before the trip, making it a positive and secure space. You could also line the inside of the carrier with a puppy pad or linen, just in case of any accidents.

LABEL EVERYTHING

Attach clear identification tags to your pet’s carrier with your contact information. Include a recent photo of your pet and stick on an extra label with your destination address. In case your pet carrier gets separated from you, this information will help reunite you and your furry friend.

PACK ESSENTIALS

Be sure to pack a travel kit, including food, water, bowls, medications, and familiar items like toys or blankets. Bring a leash for pre-boarding and post-flight bathroom breaks. Ensure you have enough supplies for the entire journey, including any potential delays.

BOOK DIRECT FLIGHTS WHEN POSSIBLE

Opt for direct flights to minimize travel time and reduce stress on your four-legged friend. Layovers and connecting flights can increase the chances of delays, and multiple takeoffs and landings may be more stressful for your pet.
