Kaouther Ben Hania’s touching documentary film, Four Daughters, won the Golden Eye Award for Best Documentary at this year’s Cannes Film Festival (16-27 May).
Four Daughters is the retelling of a Tunisian family’s experience with trauma, radicalisation but also sisterhood. Two of mother Olfa’s daughters become entangled in the Islamic State (IS) group as young teenagers and suddenly disappear.
Coproduced by Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, France and Germany, the film creatively uses actresses as aides to fill in for the absent sisters, better weaving memory into the fabric of the story.
