Three senior Lesotho Defence Force officials, including Commander Lieutenant General Khoantle Motsomotso, are reported to have been killed following a shootout in Motsomotso’s Maseru office on Tuesday.
According to the SABC’s acting political editor, Sophie Mokoena, the senior officials “have been assassinated and some senior politicians have fled country”.
Eye witnesses allegedly said that just before 10am Colonel Tefo Hashatsi and Colonel Bulane Sechele forced their way into Motsomotso’s office in the Lesotho capital and demanded to see him.
Shots were then apparently fired.
According to unconfirmed reports, Motsomotso was killed as well as the two rival military officers.
Lesotho has suffered instability since 2014 when there was an attempted coup.
