American rapper Joyner Lucas has released a brutal but bridge-building video about racism that is creating waves around the world, and has already been viewed more than 2.2 million times in less than two days.

South African expat and comedian Trevor Noah – who currently lives in the USA and hosts the Daily Show – shared the video, saying simply: “Wow. This is just wow.”

The short segment shared by Joyner and Trevor on Twitter is harsh and horrific… but when viewers click through to view the entire video on YouTube, the message of unity and understanding becomes clear.

“I wish we could trade shoes or we could change lives
So we could understand each other more, but that’d take time
I’m not racist, it’s like we livin’ in the same buildin’, but splittin’ the both sides
I’m not racist, but there’s two sides to every story and now you know mine.”

The video is full of profanities… but more importantly, it’s full of all the misconceptions and stereotypical views that get in the way of many black and white people living harmoniously together.

The video, which was filmed last week, shows a white guy – wearing a ‘Make American Great Again’ cap – and Joyner having an ‘uncomfortable’ conversation. (In reality Joyner sings the entire song, and the white guy is lip-syncing.)

The video reveals the unhappy state of race relations in America and drives home the importance of listening and understanding, even if one doesn’t always agree…

Twenty-nine year old Joyner told CNN: “It’s a very uncomfortable conversation to have” and that he has been “shocked at the amount of love that I’m seeing. I’m not seeing as much hatred.” He says this video is “just my way of changing the world one day at a time”.
