Houston, Texas, has experienced “catastrophic flooding” like nothing seen before. Officials said Hurricane Harvey caused “landmark” flooding over the weekend which will be felt for years, and warned that more heavy rainfall is expected in the coming days.
So far at least 8 fatalities have been confirmed; and over 30,000 people are expected to have to be housed in emergency shelters… after the tropical storm stalled overland, bringing at least 66cm of rainfall.
Thousands have taken to their rooftops. Over 1,000 people have already been rescued, 200 of which were by air.
Harvey has strengthened and could make its way back to the coast before returning to land, even more powerful. Thousands of disaster relief crews and national and state guards have been deployed.
Although the storm was predicted, the city chose to not evacuate its residents beforehand. Mayor Sylvester Turner said he has no regrets as they couldn’t send people away when nobody knew exactly where the hurricane would go. Over 50 counties in Texas have been declared state disaster areas.
But as the rain falls down, heroes have risen to rescue those caught up in the flooding… watch below:
