You can’t judge a book by its cover, but you can judge a man by the way he treats animals… which makes informal settlement resident Shaygam Newman one of the greatest guys in South Africa, and the world.
Shaygam takes care of 15 dogs and 13 cats, and feeds and supports many more of the strays in Hangberg, on the outskirts of Hout Bay in the Western Cape.
A facebook page – Shaygam’s Shelter – has been created to support the remarkable 23-year-old who has been bringing stray dogs home since he was 10-years-old (and who was thrown out of his house for doing so).
The inspiring animal carer, who has barely any possessions himself, devotes his life to caring for stray animals.
In a short video produced by Zoomin.TV, Shaygam explains: “Animals mean a lot to me. They’re like my family, because when I grew up I didn’t have any.”
Shaygam is aware that what he’s doing isn’t enough to solve the problem of stray animals. He says without someone in the community to sterilise the dogs, the number of puppies will grow… and they in turn will breed when they grow up…
For now, it is not just the dogs he takes care of that are benefitting from Shaygam’s selfless nature… but the youngsters in the community too.
“There are a lot of young guys who come to me on weekends and we take the dogs for long walks. You see – I keep them off the streets. In our community there’s a lot of gangsterism… so I keep them out of trouble,” he says.
