With the latest South African “looting video” going viral, some are questioning just how ‘funny’ this growing problem in South Africa is. The person filming the blatant theft by multiple people – from a moving Coca-Cola truck in the Eastern Cape – can be heard laughing in the background, at the audacity of the thieves, throughout the scene… although he is shocked at first and can be heard saying ‘haibo‘ (oh no).

The incident, in which locals were stealing bottles of Sparletta Pine Nut, took place in Msobomvu, Butterworth, on Tuesday.

Tristan Wiggill, who uploaded the video on Wednesday, said: “Truck looting is a major problem in the country and there is little being done to stop the practice.”

Several other videos can be found on YouTube showing passersby stealing everything from beer to toilet rolls from vehicles stuck in traffic, or waiting at traffic lights, in South Africa.

SA Police Services (SAPS) were apparently deployed to the scene in Butterworth, and a spokesperson said arrests are imminent should the truck driver decide to open up a case of theft, as SAPS has identified some of the culprits.

Facebook page CICA (Crime Intelligence & Community Awareness in South Africa) says: “Initial comments we have seen include people saying things like ‘This is why I love Africa’ & ‘Yo-I love my people – this is so funny’.

“Is theft funny? How does theft benefit a nation? Help us understand. Please. Thoughts?”
