South Africans have praised CEO of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), Jimi Matthews, for his resignation and explanation that he can “no longer be a part” of what is going on at the SABC.

In recent times the national broadcaster has introduced a policy refusing to show violent protests around the country, alleging this is to prevent copycat protests but suspected by many to have been implemented to prevent anti-ANC feelings in the lead-up to the elections in August.

In his resignation letter, addressed to Professor Maguvhe, Chair of the SABC Board, Matthews wrote: “It is with great sadness that I tender my immediate resignation. For many months I have compromised the values that I hold dear under the mistaken belief that I could be more effective inside the SABC than outside, passing comment from the side-lines.

“In the process the prevailing, corrosive atmosphere has imparted negatively on my moral judgement and has made me complicit in many decisions which I am not proud of.

“I wish also to apologise to the many people who I’ve let down by remaining silent when my voice needed to be heard.

“What is happening at the SABC is wrong and I can no longer be a part of it.”

Krivani Pillay and two other senior SABC journalists are also planning to take the SABC to the Constitutional Court over the decision to not cover violent protests, blaming SABC COO Hlaudi Mosoeneng for the ban… and sparking the hashtag on social media #HlaudiMustFall.

Yusuf Abramjee praised Pillay and her colleagues “for standing up for what’s right. We salute you.”

Thabo T-Bo Touch has also resigned from the SABC’s Metro FM (see his letter below).
