If there’s one movie you watch today – make it Sarafina! In South Africa movie theatres across the land are commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Soweto Uprising on 16 June 1976 with free screenings of the film. (Watch trailer below.)
There have been scenes around the country today – #YouthDay – of old people wearing school uniforms and children dancing the Sarafina dance.
The movie tells the story of teenage students in Soweto, led by Sarafina (Leleti Khumalo) during the Soweto Uprising. American actress Whoopi Goldberg is their revolutionary teacher and Miriam Makeba stars as Sarafina’s mother. The 1992 drama was directed by Darrell Roodt and adapted from the musical written by Mbongeni Ngema.
The students were protesting the government’s decree to impose Afrikaans – which was seen as “the language of the oppressor” – as the main language of instruction in schools. The police, during the apartheid era, responded by opening fire on the students. At least 170 people died and over 1,000 were injured.
E.TV is also going to air Sarafina! at 8.30pm this evening with a repeat at 00:15am
