Over 500 starfish were saved yesterday, quite fittingly on World Oceans Day, thanks to the awesome community spirit in Fish Hoek, a community which rallied together in March to fight the Cape Fires.
“It is NEVER dull and boring in the Deep South of Cape Town,” says photographer Robyn Gwilt who captured most of the photos on this page.
Starfish have been washing up on the beaches recently due to the huge swells in the ocean. And in true community fashion, Fish Hoek residents have been picking them up and placing them into “holding pools” for safe-keeping.

Yesterday was “release day” with the removal of over 500 of these recently rescued starfish from Fish Hoek’s Skellies Pool and Glencairn Beach Tidal Pool.
“They were clearly happy, as they were stuck very fast to the rocks and we had to submerge to find some of them,” says Robyn.
“It was wonderful to see the community support for AfriOceans Conservation Alliance.
“The starfish were then transported to Simonstown by AfriOceans, and then taken by Simonstown Boat Company to deeper water, where they belong.”
