On Thursday, 24 April 2025, South Africans proudly celebrate 2,000 days since the Springboks lifted the Webb Ellis Cup in Yokohama, Japan, in 2019, a lasting symbol of rugby glory. The day carries even more weight, as it also marks the reversal of VAT increases in South Africa. A double win, indeed!

For those following rugby enthusiast Jared Wright on X, the countdown has been impossible to miss. He’s tracked each day of Springbok world champion status with dedication and pride. Hats off to you, Jared, for keeping the spirit alive with your daily updates!

2000 days of Springbok dominance

Isn’t it incredible to realise the Springboks have held onto rugby’s highest honour for 2,000 days since that unforgettable triumph in Yokohama back in November 2019? For 2,000 days and counting, the men in green and gold have remained at the summit of international rugby.

When captain Siya Kolisi hoisted the Webb Ellis Cup, few could have predicted the extraordinary path that lay ahead. With Rassie Erasmus and Jacques Nienaber steering the ship, the Boks defended their status through a powerful mix of tactical genius, relentless determination, and unshakable resilience.

WHAT ABOUT 3000 DAYS?

The next Rugby World Cup will wrap up on Sunday, 13 November 2027, giving the Springboks a guaranteed 933 more days as reigning world champions. But if they aim to stretch that run to 3,000 days and beyond, they’ll need to make history by becoming the first team to win three consecutive Rugby World Cups.

As the countdown continues, the question remains: can the veterans of this golden era go the distance? Players like Siya Kolisi, Eben Etzebeth, and Handré Pollard have already cemented their status as national icons. But do they still have the fitness, drive, sacrifice, and unshakable belief needed to carry the Boks to another title in 2027?

TREASURE CHEST OF NEW TALENT

Thankfully, coach Rassie looks to already be nurturing the next dynasty of Springbok champions for 2027 and beyond. The likes of Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Aphelele Fassi and more, are being prepared for the rigours of a title defence.

In a nation forever navigating complex social divisions, the World Champion Springboks continue to serve as a powerful unifying force. The team’s journey mirrors South Africa’s troubled yet remarkable narrative. Never say die, never give up. But, for now, let’s take a moment to savour 2000 days of excellence. We’ve earned it!
