SASSA grant hikes in the last five years

With the much-anticipated Budget Speech 2025 taking place on 12 March, SASSA grant increases are one of the areas that are of great interest.

The 2025 Budget Speech on Wednesday, 12 March, will determine whether more than 28 million SASSA beneficiaries will receive grant increases and by how much.

While waiting for this to be revealed, it would be interesting to know how grant amounts have changed over the years. So let’s see how the various SASSA grants have increased over the past five years.

SASSA GRANT INCREASES OVER THE PAST FIVE YEARS

The upcoming Budget Speech 2025 will announce the possible SASSA grant increases for the 2025/2026 financial year. But let us look at the changes in grant amounts from April 2020 to March 2025. Here are the amounts below.

APRIL 2020 – MARCH 2021

  • Older persons: R1 860 (+R20 if 75 and older)
  • Disability: R1 860
  • Child support: R445
  • Foster child: R1 040
  • Care dependency: R1 860
  • War veteran’s: R1 880
  • Grant-in-aid: R445
  • SRD: R350

SASSA GRANT INCREASES FROM APRIL 2021 – MARCH 2022

  • Older persons: R1 890 (+R20 if 75 and older)
  • Disability: R1 890
  • Child support: R460
  • Foster child: R1 050
  • Care dependency: R1 890
  • War veteran’s: R1 890 (+R20)
  • Grant-in-aid: R460
  • SRD: R350

APRIL 2022 – MARCH 2023

  • Older persons: R1 980 (+R20 if 75 and older)
  • Disability: R1 980
  • Child support: R480
  • Child support (Top-Up): R480 + R240
  • Foster child: R1 070
  • Care dependency: R1 980
  • War veteran’s: R1 980 (+R20)
  • Grant-in-aid: R480
  • SRD: R350

In October 2022, Older persons, Disability, Care Dependency and War veteran’s SASSA grants increased by R10, going up to R1 990.

WILL THE NEXT FINANCIAL YEAR SEE BIGGER SASSA GRANT INCREASES LIKE APRIL 2023 – MARCH 2024?

The biggest rise in grants was in 2023 and 2024. Amounts went up by up to R100 for some beneficiaries, while others saw theirs being raised by between R20 and R50.

  • Older persons: R2 080 (+R20 if 75 and older)
  • Disability: R2 080
  • Child support: R500
  • Child support (Top-Up): R500 + R250
  • Foster child: R1 120
  • Care dependency: R2 080
  • War veteran’s: R2 080 (+R20)
  • Grant-in-aid: R500
  • SRD: R350

Some beneficiaries saw an additional R10 added to their grants in October 2023 and 2024. This means SASSA recipients could expect a raise in October with amounts possibly being announced during the Budget Speech 2025.

APRIL 2024 – MARCH 2025

  • Older persons: R2 180 (+R20 if 75 and older)
  • Disability: R2 180
  • Child support: R530
  • Child support (Top-Up): R530 + 260
  • Foster child: R1 180
  • Care dependency: R2 180
  • War veteran’s: R2 180 (+R20)
  • Grant-in-aid: R530
  • SRD: R370

In the last financial year, October 2024 saw Older persons, Disability, Care dependency and War veteran’s SASSA grants increase to R2 190. Child support (Top-Up) was R530 + R270.
