Malema honoured on birthday: From expulsion to political force
Malema is celebrating his 44th birthday and the EFF has paid tribute to its founder and leader.
Julius Malema marks his 44th birthday on 3 March, and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are celebrating their founder and leader, reflecting on his remarkable political journey
The party took a trip down memory lane, acknowledging the long road one of South Africa’s most recognisable political figures has taken thus far.
Malema’s bold leadership style, marked by both passionate support and intense opposition, has made him a figure of national debate. While his advocacy for radical economic change has garnered substantial support, his approach has also sparked criticism.
Malema’s ANC past inspired formation of the EFF
The EFF’s tribute highlighted Malema’s role in reshaping South Africa’s political landscape, pointing to his unwavering commitment to the party’s foundational principles of land reform, economic justice, and social equality.
The EFF recounted how Malema entered into politics at a young age, joining the ANC when he was only nine years old through its youth wing. He then joined the ANC Youth League, where he became the chairperson of his branch in 1995.
Malema became the national leader of the ANC Youth League in 2008, where his views began to draw controversy within the party.:
“His call for the expropriation of land without compensation and his critique of white monopoly capital made him a target of the reactionary forces within the ANC.”
Ultimately, Malema’s expulsion from the ruling party in 2012 would see the formation of his own political party in 2013.
“Under his leadership, the EFF became the third largest political party in South Africa within its first year of existence, fundamentally shifting the country’s political landscape.”
EFF leader juggles both career and family
The EFF commented that Malema, who has served as a member of the National Assembly since 2014, has juggled his career with his personal life:
“Despite his demanding role in politics, Malema remains a dedicated family man and a leader who is deeply connected to his community. His generosity, love for his people, and commitment to uplifting the poor are a testimony to his belief in collective progress.”
Alongside his political career, Malema has also maintained a strong family life, marrying his longtime partner Mantwa Matlala Malema in 2014. The couple has two children, Munzhedzi and Kopano, as well as a son, Ratanang, from a previous relationship.
