Disruptive rains expected to persist in these provinces this week

As KwaZulu-Natal continues to recover from the devastating impact of recent flooding, more severe weather is expected in some provinces.

SAWS has issued more weather warnings for parts of the country. Some provincial leaders have urged the public to heed to these warnings.

DISRUPTIVE RAINS EXPECTED IN SOME PROVINCES

The weather service has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for certain provinces. Central and eastern parts of the country could experience severe thunderstorms, disruptive rains and damaging winds.

These weather conditions could persist on Thursday. Heavy downpours leading to localised flooding and excessive lightning and hail are predicted.

Friday and Saturday will see most parts of the country, except the western interior, experiencing scattered showers and thunderstorms.

PUBLIC URGED TO HEED TO WEATHER WARNINGS

Residents and motorists have been urged to be alert and safe during inclement weather. Following the disruptive rains in Dutban, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (KZN COGTA) has especially appealed to residents to stay safe.

“The heavy rains have resulted in widespread destruction, particularly in coastal regions. Communities and roadways within the Ugu District and eThekwini Metro have experienced severe flooding.

“In light of the ongoing weather conditions, the MEC for COGTA urgently appeals to residents in low-lying areas to seek shelter on higher ground. The risk of flooding remains exceptionally high, particularly in vulnerable areas.

“Motorists are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution while driving, as roads are exceptionally slippery due to the persistent rainfall,” KZN COGTA said in a statement.
