SASSA Black Card: What happens if you miss the application deadline
Wondering what will happen if you don’t apply for a SASSA Postbank black card? Here’s what you can expect

SASSA has announced an important update. They have extended the application for the Postbank black card from 28 February 2025 to 20 March 2025 as some beneficiaries had not applied for the Postbank black card yet.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF I DON’T APPLY FOR THE POSTBANK BLACK CARD BY MARCH?
The good news is that you will still receive your grant payment, even after the deadline in March. However, you must visit a Post Office branch to access your funds.
Solly Malatsi, Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, and Nokuzola Tolashe, Minister of Social Development in a joint press release said, “Furthermore, the 20th of March deadline marks the date when the SASSA Gold Cards will stop working, not the last day to apply for the new card. After the 20th of March, beneficiaries will still be able to apply for and receive their Postbank Black Cards.”
Additionally, mobile officers will be deployed in rural areas to assist those who may find it challenging to travel to apply for the Postbank black card.
SASSA WARNS OF FAKE WEBSITE TO APPLY FOR POSTBANK BLACK CARD
SASSA is alerting its beneficiaries to be cautious of a fake website claiming to assist with applications for the Postbank black card. The fake website features an eye-catching headline that reads: APPLY FOR YOUR POSTBANK BLACK CARD TODAY!
LONG QUEUES AND CONFUSION FOR SASSA POSTBANK BLACK CARD APPLICATION
Daily Maverick reported that the transition to the new Postbank black card has sparked significant confusion and long queues among beneficiaries. Additionally, there are concerns about whether residents in rural areas will have access to selected stores such as Checkers, Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Usave or Boxer considering their distance from these stores.
Postbank CEO Nikki Mbengashe said that they are promoting their cardless withdrawal option to reduce long queues.
She said, “We are working around the clock to expand the cardless cash withdrawal option. It’s very easy to onboard a beneficiary, so this will alleviate the pressures in the queues.”
