Airports Company SA records high passenger traffic during festive season

Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has said that it was a very busy festive travel period in 2024, with records showing great recovery.

ACSA up to 91% recovery

Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has revealed that it was a very successful 2024 peak travel period, with records indicating a 91% recovery to pre-pandemic levels and a 5% year-on-year increase in total passenger traffic. 

According to a statement, ACSA processed a whopping 3 705 778 passengers in December 2024, with the busiest day being 13 December when 139 935 passengers were processed and 1 139 air traffic movements were recorded.

South Africa’s three major airports, O.R. Tambo International Airport (ORTIA), Cape Town International Airport (CTIA), and King Shaka International Airport (KSIA) also all achieved their traffic projections for the period.

Cape Town Airport records over half a million arrivals

Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) also recorded a 3% year-on-year increase in passenger arrivals this festive traevel period.

With 533 829 arrivals, the numbers align with forecasted growth, showcasing a strong festive season for travel to one of Africa’s top destinations.

What the numbers say

According to Cape Town Tourism, the numbers when broken down, looked like this:

  • International arrivals: 160 537 (+3.7%)
  • Regional arrivals: 10 491 (+22.5%)
  • Domestic arrivals: 362 222 (+2.3%)

The most notable growth came from regional arrivals, which surged by 22.5%, underscoring Cape Town’s appeal to neighbouring countries. International arrivals at Cape Town airport increased by 3.7%, while domestic travel, which accounts for the most considerable portion of passenger numbers, grew by 2.3%.

“These numbers show the growing confidence in Cape Town as a destination that draws visitors from all corners. With enhanced air access and our city’s unmatched appeal, from locals rediscovering their home to international travellers exploring our world-famous attractions, Cape Town is a favourite for many.” Enver Duminy, CEO of Cape Town Tourism said.
