12-hour power outage set to impact these Cape Town areas
Certain areas of Cape Town will experience a 12-hour power outage as essential infrastructure upgrades are carried out.
Residents in Observatory, Salt River, and parts of Woodstock should prepare for a 12-hour power outage as the City of Cape Town’s Electricity Generation and Distribution Department undertakes essential infrastructure upgrades.The work is scheduled to take place overnight from 20:00 on Friday, 24 January, to 8:00 on Saturday, 25 January.
However, if adverse weather conditions arise, the project will be postponed to Friday, 7 February, during the same hours.
Areas set to be affected by the power outage and precautions for Residents
The outage will affect the entirety of Observatory, Salt River, and specific parts of Woodstock. During the maintenance period, electricity supply will remain off in these areas. Residents are urged to prepare by switching off appliances to prevent damage caused by potential power surges when electricity is restored.
“The electricity supply could be restored at any time and customers must treat all electrical installations as live for the full duration of the interruption,” the city’s statement read.
The city also reminded residents to monitor updates on its official communication platforms, including social media and the municipal Call Centre.

Restoration times and possible delays
The estimated duration of the power outage is 12 hours, but restoration could face delays due to the complexity of the work.
“Our teams will work as quickly as possible to complete the work within the communicated time,” the city explained.
“If the electrical loads are too high on restoration, or unforeseen matters occur, the restoration times could be impacted.”
The city apologised for the inconvenience caused, expressing gratitude for residents’ understanding and cooperation.
