While South Africans celebrate the start of the stone fruit season, the excitement extends to India, where South Africa exports peaches, nectarines, and plums. These fruits are now being stocked in major cities across India.

SA fruit enjoyed in India for decades

Many people around the world know South Africa for its fertile lands. India has trusted the country as a reliable source of high-quality stone fruits for decades. Indian customers look forward to the stone fruit season each year as they rely on South Africa’s fruit to be tasty, have vibrant colours, and be of a high quality.

This season marks a continued effort to strengthen the bond between South African growers and Indian consumers. As in many countries, there is a growing awareness of healthy eating in India. Therefore fruits in general have become more popular. Consumers enjoy fruits as nutrient-rich snacks and fresh desserts. They also use them as ingredients for creative recipes.

Commitment to quality

Sachin Khurana, India’s representative for South African stone fruits, said that they are thrilled to bring the fruits to India again this season. Khurana added that Indian consumers have embraced the exceptional quality of South Africa’s fruits, and they are committed to providing customers with the freshest and finest produce.

South African growers optimistic about crops

Growers are positive about the South African stone fruit export season for 2024/2025. Based on early indications, they believe that the overall volumes will increase compared to last year. The previous season was quite challenging due to extreme weather events. Logistical disruptions, specifically in the Port of Cape Town, also posed challenges.

Overall, projections show that the worldwide export of apricots, nectarines, and plums, in particular, will see significant growth in export volumes.

Peach chutney – make your own

A popular use for peaches, especially ones that are ripe and may go bad soon, is homemade peach chutney. Many people in India enjoy this condiment, made with Indian spices, with meals and serve it as an appetizer with paratha (Indian flat bread). Click here to see a recipe for peach chutney.
