Nasiphi Moya of ActionSA becomes the new mayor of Tshwane

Nasiphi Moya was elected as the new mayor of Tshwane after her party, ActionSA, and the ANC agreed to collaborate in the metro.

ActionSA senator Nasiphi Moya has been appointed as the new mayor of the City of Tshwane.

Moya who served as ousted mayor Cilliers Brink’s deputy was elected on Wednesday, 9 October.

NASIPHI MOYA ELECTED TSHWANE MAYOR

Earlier on Wednesday, the African National Congress (ANC) confirmed that it reached a deal with ActionSA and announced that it would back Moya.

The DA also tried to negotiate and gave the ANC an ultimatum to either re-elect Brink as Tshwane mayor or the party will pull out of the ongoing stability pact negotiations in metropolitan municipalities across the country.

Moya was up against Brink for the position and a total of 122 councillors voted for her while 86 voted for Brink.

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE NEW MAYOR:

  • Moya was born and bred in Mpikwana, Mthatha, in the Eastern Cape before moving to Cape Town when she was 15.
  • The ActionSA senator is a former group head of the office of the chief whip in Tshwane
  • She has also worked as chief of staff in the office of the Tshwane mayor
  • Moya has a Masters in Philosophy from the University of Cape Town
  • She also holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of the Western Cape
