Summer tourism to sizzle in Durban

With a forecasted occupancy rate of 65% from December to February, and 80% expected in December alone, Durban is expecting a busy summer.

According to Travel News, international tourists are expected to account for 7% of visitors, 13% will be from KZN province with the remaining 80% from South Africa’s other provinces.

“We want tourists to discover Durban’s hidden gems, the less explored aspects of our city, from stunning coastal beach resorts to charming local attractions,” eThekwini Municipality Spokesperson Gugu Sisilana said as per Travel News.

“We also want our visitors to know that the city is ready to host them. The safety of residents and visitors remains a top priority as the city gears up for the festive season.” Sisilana added.

What to do in the city this summer

If you’re one of the many expected to hit the Durban city this summer, here are three things you must do:

Visit the Golden Mile in Durban

One option would be to explore Durban’s famous Golden Mile, a stretch of golden beaches that offer a vibrant atmosphere. You can take a leisurely stroll along the promenade, enjoy the sea breeze, or even hire a scooter or bike to explore. The Golden Mile is also lined with shops, cafes, and great restaurants, allowing you to indulge in local cuisine or pick up some souvenirs.

Check out some marine life at uShaka Marine World

You could also spend some time at uShaka Marine World, a popular marine theme park that combines entertainment, education, and marine conservation in Durban. The park features an aquarium with a variety of sea life, water slides, and pools. You can enjoy thrilling water activities, watch dolphin and seal shows, and learn about marine ecosystems. It’s a great option for families or anyone interested in marine life.

Get an adrenaline rush at Moses Mabhida Stadium

Moses Mabhida Stadium, an iconic landmark in Durban, is also a must-visit on a day-trip. You can take a SkyCar ride to the top of the arch for panoramic views of the city and the coastline. For the more adventurous, there’s the Big Swing, a 220-meter freefall swing from the stadium arch. You can also explore the People’s Park surrounding the stadium, which often hosts events and offers a pleasant green space.
