Rand Water imposes Level 1 restrictions across Gauteng
In related news, Rand Water has imposed Level 1 water restrictions across Gauteng to address the growing demand on the province’s water supply. These restrictions, which will remain in place until March 2025, were implemented as Rand Water grapples with high consumption, illegal mining, and unauthorised water connections.
Rand Water CEO Sipho Mosai explained, “The increased demand, alongside the impact of illegal activities, is creating a severe strain on our water supply system.” Johannesburg Water has similarly reported water shortages resulting from excessive consumption.
The restrictions prohibit residents from watering their gardens between 6:00 and 18:00, and using hosepipes to wash driveways or paved areas is prohibited. The objective is to curb unnecessary water use during peak hours.
Tips for water conservation during restrictions
To help residents adapt, Rand Water has provided several water-saving tips. Simple actions, like fixing leaks, turning off dripping taps, and reusing grey water for gardening, can make a big difference in water conservation efforts.
“Every resident has a role to play in conserving water,” Mosai urged. “We need to work together to ensure our water resources are sustained as demand continues to rise.”
Other recommendations include taking shorter showers, using a glass of water when brushing teeth, and washing cars on the grass to allow grey water to nourish the lawn.
