Economic Freedom Fighters President Julius Malema asserts that the party remains strong despite Floyd Shivambu’s departure.

The former EFF Deputy President resigned from the party last month to join MK Party. Speaking to Clement Manyathela on SABC News, Malema said that he and Shivambu have no personal relationship.

The two formed EFF back in 2013 after Malema was expelled from the ANC. A year later, the party surprised many at the 2014 national elections when they received over 1 million votes thus making them the third largest party in the country at the time.

The party continues to grow over the years with many predicting them to become the country’s opposition. This past election, however, the EFF dropped to 9%, making them the fourth largest political party behind ANC, DA and MK.

“I don’t have anything to do with him,” Malema said when asked about his friendship with Shivambu, The EFF leader claimed that he and the former deputy president were only connected politically.

“No, no, no, what brought us together was a common purpose. We met in the trenches, we didn’t meet in the club, we didn’t meet at church, we didn’t fall in love with each other at university in the same class. What brought us together was sharing together the common agenda for the revolution. “

“And once we started seeing things differently, there’s no need for me to have any relationship[with Shivambu],” Malema added.

“I got some sense of relief. It was as if I put down some heavy load. So it’s not always that bad things will produce bad results, perhaps at times they produce very good results.”
