Table Mountain Cableway enlists Swiss engineers for maintenance
Engineers from Switzerland have reportedly been enlisted to accomplish all the Table Mountain Cableway’s maintenance goals.
Table Mountain Aerial Cableway brings in highly-skilled engineers
The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company has brought in a skilled team of engineers from Switzerland to help ensure the best possible maintenance of the cableway.
According to Cape Town Etc, Technical Executive Andries de Vries said that the Swiss engineers, from the Doppelmayr-Garaventa Group, are the original manufacturers who installed the cableway way back in 1997.
“They’ve also got all the specialised tools to do cablework because in South Africa, other than the mines, we don’t really have this level of cableway,” De Vries said as per Cape Town Etc.
“The next two-and-a-half weeks is going to be… time will tell… this is crunch time, but so far we’ve clawed back the time we lost in the beginning and we’re on schedule.” he added.
Seven week-long shut down
The Table Mountain aerial cableway (TMACC) which has been shut down from 15 July, will be closed for seven weeks to complete the annual maintenance as well as replace the track ropes to which the cable car is attached.
TMACC said that the Cableway, along with all commercial and public outlets and operations at both the Upper and Lower Stations on Table Mountain will remain closed to the public for the duration of the maintenance. This also includes all shops, restaurants, and ablution facilities.
While the cable cars maybe shut down for now, hiking routes will still be available for hikers and climbers to enjoy.
The cableway will re-open, weather permitting on Monday, 2 September 2024.
