Flights resume after power outage at Cape Town Airport
A power outage hit Cape Town International Airport last night and forced several aircraft to be grounded and flights to be diverted.
Power outage halts operations at Cape Town Airport
On Sunday evening, 28 July, Cape Town International Airport experienced a large power outage that affected runway lights, air-side fire rescue, and air traffic navigation services.
Flights could not land or depart and some flights were even diverted to other airports within the network while technicians raced to restore power to the airport.
According to The Citizen, Airports Company SA (Acsa) has now confirmed that, fortunately, all operations resumed at the airport after 01:00 this morning, 29 July.
The restored power then allowed 11 aircraft to land.
“Acsa technicians and specialists are continuing with permanent repairs and restoration of the network. However, we are waiting for a clear window of opportunity to execute the required work,” Acsa as per The Citizen.
FlySafair flights diverted
Local airline, FlySafair was one of the airlines affected and reported on their website that several flights had to be diverted.
As reported by Cape Town ETC, the airline stated that flights en route to Cape Town were being diverted to their planned diversion airports, while new departures were being halted until the situation was resolved.
‘FlySafair’s Operations team is hard at work to minimize the impact of these delays. We await information from ACSA as to when Cape Town International will be operational again. Once this is understood, our teams will plan new departures and arrange landing and departure slots from the airport,’ the statement read.
