Canine crisis in Mbombela: Suspected dog poisonings spark alert
Sadly, two dogs have succumbed to suspected poisoning, with a third case under investigation…
Mbombela residents with dogs are on high alert following reports of multiple suspected poisonings.
According to Callum MacPherson of Securicon, a security company, two confirmed dog poisonings have occurred. One dog died in Steiltes on Tuesday, 9 July, with another succumbing on Wednesday, 10 July. A third incident in Grosskopf Street, West Acres, reported on July 10th, is currently under investigation by Securicon.
DOG POISONING SYMPTOMS
“If you believe your dog may have been poisoned, be aware of the signs,” MacPherson advised. “These include excessive drooling, shivering, and diarrhoea.” He continued, stressing safety precautions, “Do not attempt to pick up your pet or touch them without gloves, as some poisons can be absorbed through human skin. Instead, wrap your dog in blankets and seek immediate veterinary attention.”
DOG POISONING PRECAUTIONS
Local authorities are currently investigating the cause of these incidents. Dog owners are advised to remain vigilant and keep their pets on leashes during walks. If you suspect your dog has been poisoned, contact your veterinarian immediately.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT DOG POISONING
Common Poisons: Unfortunately, many everyday substances can be poisonous to dogs. Here are some of the most common culprits:
- Household items: Rodenticides (rat poison), insecticides (bug sprays), medications (human and veterinary), antifreeze, and certain cleaning products.
- Plants: Lilies, sago palms, cycads, and oleander are all toxic to dogs.
- Foods: Chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, macadamia nuts, and xylitol (artificial sweetener) can be harmful.
If you suspect your dog has been poisoned:
- Act quickly: Time is critical in getting your dog veterinary treatment.
- Identify the poison (if possible): Knowing what your dog ingested can help the vet determine the best course of action.
- Do not induce vomiting unless instructed by a veterinarian.
- Call your veterinarian or animal poison control immediately. Having the number readily available can save precious time.
Prevention is Key:
- Keep your dog on a leash during walks to prevent them from ingesting something harmful.
- Store all potential poisons out of reach of your dog.
- Be aware of the plants in your garden and avoid letting your dog near them.
- Educate yourself about common dog poisons.
