As the Easter weekend approaches, motorists are receiving stern warnings against flouting traffic regulations, with law enforcement agencies ramping up their efforts to ensure road safety nationwide.

Minister of Transport, Sindisiwe Chikunga, has emphasised the implementation of roadblocks on major routes and residential areas to curb reckless behaviours this Easter.

MINISTER WARNS OF EASTER WEEKEND TRAFFIC SURGE

Anticipating increased traffic volumes, Chikunga outlined the expected patterns, urging motorists to plan their journeys accordingly. She highlighted peak periods starting Thursday, 28 March, and extending until Sunday, 31 March, with particularly heavy traffic on Monday, 1 April.

Speaking at the 2024 Easter Road Safety Campaign in Mpumalanga, Minister Chikunga revealed the government’s target of reducing road fatalities by 15% during Easter.

Emphasising preparedness for this Easter weekend, she detailed focused policing efforts on key routes. Notably the N1 towards Polokwane and the N3 to Durban.

The authorities also urged the religious community, particularly pilgrims, to ensure the roadworthiness of hired transport.

Chikunga stressed the importance of fatigue management and proper permits for hired vehicles this Easter weekend.

“This will help to avoid conflict with other operators and inconvenience to passengers when the vehicles are stopped by law enforcement authorities,” the Minister said.

Furthermore, Chikunga reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing road safety through integrated law enforcement and community engagement.

OFFICIALS WARN OF CONSEQUENCES FOR RECKLESS DRIVING

Minister Chikunga issued a stern warning to offenders, underscoring the consequences of reckless driving, including potential incarceration if caught.

Also, she urged all road users to prioritise safety and adhere to traffic regulations this Easter weekend. She emphasised that irresponsible behavior poses a threat to society.

As law enforcement agencies intensify their efforts, motorists must exercise caution and responsibility on the roads during the Easter weekend.
