Hugo Broos linked to move to coaching job in Tunisia
Bafana Bafana coach, Hugo Broos has been rumoured to be in talks for a deal in Tunisia. SAFA also responded to the rumours.
Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos is believed to be on his way out, according to the latest reports.
This comes after an impressive 2023 Afcon campaign, which saw Broos leading Bafana to a bronze medal finish.
That brought an end to a rather successful campaign for a Bafana side that left South Africa with little fanfare. Broos’ men started off in rather shaky and disappointing fashion, losing 2-0 to eventual group winners Mali. They would quickly dust themselves off by beating neighbours Namibia 4-0. They would conclude their group campaign with a 0-0 draw against Tunisia, securing second place.
That didn’t seem to do Bafana Bafana any favours, however, as they were pitted against Morocco. They equipped themselves well against the 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-finalist, winning 2-0. Having knocked out the top team in Africa and the tournament, the confidence was high. What would be next was a brilliant Ronwen Williams penalty shootout performance to beat Cape Verde.
Unfortunately for Bafana, it would be a penalty shootout that would knock them out next, losing to Nigeria. But at that point, they had already earned hero status back home, with Broos changing many perceptions about him. That also saw other national teams look to him, as well as club sides abroad. The latest was thought to be Club Brugge, a club he is both a playing and coaching legend at. He did, however, reiterate his commitment to the national team cause to South African journalists before the FIFA Series.
It’s for that reason that reports in Tunisia of Broos leaving Bafana for their national team come as a shock. But SAFA have since refuted those claims according to SowetanLIVE.
SAFA RUBBISH HUGO BROOS BAFANA EXIT TO TUNISIA TALKS
“The coach answered this very same question during a Zoom press briefing with SA media a couple of days ago and nothing has changed,We are on our way to training at the match venue as we speak. I’m on the team bus with the coach and we are going to training.”.
It now remains to be seen if Broos remains Bafana coach after the Algeria side, or leaves for Tunisia.
