SMART ID CARDS: CLEARING UP CONFUSION
Smart ID cards rolled out in 2013, as a project by the Department of Home Affairs (DHA).
Online applications are open. If you’d like to apply for your South African identity card, make an appointment with your local Home Affairs office – or apply online.
Cards have at least a 10-year lifespan.
Your most essential personal information appears on your Smart ID Card.
SMART ID CARDS: WHO CAN APPLY FOR ONE?
You can apply for a new ID Card if you have a South African Identity Document (green ID book) or birth certificate.
According to the Frequently Asked Questions, smart cards are issued to 16-year-olds and pensioners first.
It is also issued to anyone who reapplies for an identity document.
WILL GREEN ID BOOKS EXPIRE?
Green identity documents will not expire this year, says the Department of Home Affairs.
Green ID books will remain valid. They are still South African identity documents.
This gives everyone time to apply for their smart(er) ID card.
