South African sports superfan Mama Joy, real name Joy Chauke, has been criticised on social media for her post defending South African Football Association (Safa) president Danny Jordaan following allegations of fraud and corruption from the Hawks.

MAMA JOY SHOWS DANNY JORDAAN SUPPORT FOLLOWING FRAUD ALLEGATIONS AT SAFA

Mama Joy, who is a Royal AM football fan after dumping Orlando Pirates in 2021, expressed her support for Jordaan following reports he is being investigated on allegations of fraud.

In an X post on Friday, 8 March, Mama Joy shared a photograph of herself and the Safa president with the caption: “Hands Off Danny Jordaan.”

However, her support was not well received by netizens.

“Don’t drag yourself Ma’am Chauke stay out of this fraud it has got nothing to do with you.”

“It is alleged that u are never in a budget or plans to go Support SA abroad. You wait for the team at the airport & beg to go with. Danny took SAFA money to approve ur trip at the airport. Unplanned R1.2 million SAFA money was spent on you & Bota abroad. Nowonder the defence [sic].”

R1.3 MILLION FRAUD ALLEGATIONS

The Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit raided the Safa headquarters after executing search and seizure warrants over allegations of fraud and corruption amounting to R1.3 million.

Gauteng Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said the allegations stem from incidents between 2014 and 2018, where SAFA President Danny Jordaan allegedly used the organisation’s resources for personal gain.

“These include hiring a private security company for his personal protection,a public relations company without authorisation from the SAFA board.

“The president is also reported to have violated SAFA statutes thus prejudicing SAFA an actual loss of R1.3 million.

“During the search, a laptop, external hard drives, a USB and documents were seized,” Mogale added.

SAFA THREATENS TO SUE

SAFA has issued a response following the allegations made by the Hawks, saying the raid was “unfortunate and a shame to our law enforcement agencies.”

“The Hawks are claiming allegations of fraud and theft amounting to R1,3 million. Safa is well aware of the amount and is satisfied that it was for services rendered, for which contracts can be provided.

“We want to set it out from the onset that we believe the search was unlawful, malicious and not conducted in terms of the directives of a warrant given to us.

“We were not furnished with all the documents prescribed by law. The documents that were furnished by the Hawks during the shameful raid were incomplete and unlawful. We contend that it was done deliberately and intentionally in order to action this malicious action,” the football organisation said.

Safa threatened to bring a formal complaint and to sue the Hawks for defamation of character for mentioning Jordan’s name.

“We will further institute civil action for defamation of character against those involved in the naming of the SAFA President’s name in an ongoing investigation. We contend that this is unethical and unlawful as the police never mentioned anyone’s name in matters that are under investigation.

“We believe, unfortunately, that these members of the police have been compromised and are being used in the callous abuse of state resources. Let us reiterate, there is no money missing from Safa.”
