Edward Kieswetter’s term as South African Revenue Service (SARS) Commissioner has been extended for two years.

Kieswetter’s term was supposed to end on 30 April.

EDWARD KIESWETTER’S TERM AS SARS COMMISSIONER EXTENDED

The Revenue Service said the decision would allow for the strategic intent and transformation the organisation embarked on in 2019.

SARS said the country can attest that measurable progress has been made to position it as a credible tax and customs authority.

Under Kieswetter, for the first time since the Revenue Service was formed it collected more than R2.68 billion in gross tax, in the 2022/23 financial year. This was a 9.7% increase compared to the previous year.

EXTENSION WILL ASSIST WITH SMOOTH LEADERSHIP TRANSITION

In addition, the term extension also provides the necessary time to continue the existing investment to strengthen the SARS leadership bench and prepare for an orderly leadership transition over the next two years.

Following the extension, Kieswetter said he could assure all South Africans that, with their support, SARS would spare no effort and continue to work hard.

“SARS remains inspired by the transformative and higher purpose of serving all South Africans,” the Commissioner added.
