Is Hugo Broos retiring after AFCON?

Had Bafana Bafana bowed out in the African Cup of Nations(Afcon) group stages, Hugo Broos would have vacated his post.

Now that he led the team to their first Afcon semi-final in 24 years, many are urging him to stay on until his contract runs out.

The 71-year-old coach is tasked with the massive job of leading the nation to their first FIFA World Cup since 2010.

Bafana have not qualified for a global showpiece since 2002 and only entered the 2010 edition as host.

Before the Nigeria clash, Broos told the media that he was keen to coach Bafana for as long as the national team keeps doing well.

“Not at all; why should I think of that [retirement]? We’re still not at the end, I said. Okay, I’m 71, so I think there’s moments to think about stopping my career,” Broos was quoted on Sunday World.

“As long as things are going the way they are now, why should I stop? I like my job, and I like football, so we will see what the future will bring.

“I think it’s totally normal that after a career of 36 years as a coach and 18 years as a professional football player, that little by little you start thinking about the end of your career, but it’s nothing more than that — nothing more,” he said.

Having lost to Nigeria in the semi-final, Bafana will now play DR Congo in the third-place match on Saturday.

Broos is expected to make several changes to give some of the players a run at the Afcon games.
