Khayelitsha Library temporarily closed after fire incident
The Khayelitsha Library in Cape Town is temporarily closed due to a post-closing fire, prompting assessment of damages.
A post-closing fire has led to the temporary closure of the Khayelitsha Library in the City of Cape Town. The incident occurred on 1 February, with an apparent explosion heard in the server room shortly before the blaze erupted.

The librarian in charge and a vigilant security guard quickly responded to the situation. Nearby community members, gearing up for a meeting in the adjacent hall, rushed to assist. Swift action from firefighters contained and extinguished the fire within minutes.

KHAYELITSHA LIBRARY FIRE: NO INJURIES
Fortunately, no patrons or staff were inside the building when the incident unfolded.
The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross, expressed gratitude to both residents and firefighters.

“I am saddened that the facility will now be unavailable to its many patrons and programmes which benefit the community. Residents can rest assured that we will do our best to get it back up and running as soon as possible,” she added.
With approximately 4000 monthly visitors, the library plays a vital role in community programs. While the closure disrupts ongoing initiatives, librarians plan to continue outreach programs by visiting Early Childhood Development centers and schools. During the drying and ventilation process, the building remains off-limits to patrons.

FIRE INVESTIGATION: PATRONS REDIRECTED
Authorities are still determining the cause of the fire and the repair cost. In the meantime, patrons are urged to use alternative libraries such as Moses Mabhida, Kulani, and Masakhane.
Contact any library to arrange renewals. The library will waive fines accrued during the closure and accurately adjust durations for tracking the shutdown.
