Will Durban’s iconic Hilton Hotel be surrendered to the City?
What is the future of Durban’s Hilton Hotel? The five star hotel has until end of March to reopen its doors.
Time is soon running out on Durban’s iconic Hilton Hotel, to reopen its doors, before a take over by the eThekwini Municipality.
The five-star hotel fell victim to the Covid-19 pandemic and closed its doors in 2021 due to low demand, leading it to be unable to finance its operations.
WILL HILTON HOTEL REOPEN?
The hotel was among 1000 across the globe being shut down by the Hilton Group during the pandemic due to loss of revenue. This includes Hilton Cape Town City Centre.

According to IOL, eThekwini Municipality Communications Spokesperson Mandela Nsele, revealed that there is a clause in the title deed, after City Manager Musa Mbhele made a remark during a council meeting.
“The municipality wishes to clarify that the remarks made by the city manager, Musa Mbhele, regarding the Hilton Hotel was in reference to a provision within the Hilton Hotel’s title deed condition, stipulating its obligation to operate as a 5-star establishment. In the event of any deviation from this standard, the municipality reserves the option to seek redemption,” Nsele says.
At tthe time of its closure, the hotel had been operating since it opening in 1997.
The hotel has until the end of March to open its doors.
