The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is the government agency that’s in charge of issuing social grants. Social grants include the R350-SRD Grant, the Childcare Grant, the Pensioners (Older Persons) Grant, and the Disability Grant – but what about the basic income grants promised?

A basic income grant is meant to be accessible to anyone who needs it. Unfortunately, the process of introducing one to South Africans has dragged on for years.

Here’s what you should know about the SASSA basic income grant, and whether we’ll see it any time soon.

SASSA: ARE WE CLOSER TO BASIC INCOME GRANTS?

According to government news reports, a basic income grant has been recommended since at least 2021.

Experts ‘recommend basic income support’ for umemployed citizens: this is the official finding of the reports to government, which complete the picture – but hasn’t brought us any closer to a practical basic income grant yet.

If it gets approved, SASSA remains the agency responsible for the basic income grant.

SASSA: WHERE IS THE BASIC INOME GRANT?

The introduction of the basic income grant has been a hot discussion for years.

According to SA Government news, recommendations were made for the introduction of a basic income grant in February 2023.
