The official pass rate for the class of 2023 is 82.9% (compared with 80.1% in 2022 and 76.4% in 2021), an improvement of 2.8% and 6.5% from the pass rates achieved by the classes of 2022 and 2021, respectively.

This was revealed by Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga when she announced the results on Thursday evening in Johannesburg.

Although the February/March supplementary exams have been phased out, a new opportunity emerges in May/June. This enables candidates to enhance their results or finish outstanding subjects, with a deadline for applications set for 31 January.

Clearly outlined entry conditions address diverse circumstances, including absence with a valid reason, opting for multiple examinations, or aspiring to elevate achievement status.

Additionally, if you suspect unfair marking, you have the option to apply for a re-mark or re-check.

If you don’t qualify for a supplementary exam, re-doing the entire matric year might appear daunting. Nevertheless, for those determined to secure their Grade 12 certificate, this option remains viable.

Private colleges such as Damelin or Abbotts College offer alternatives, facilitating matriculation through correspondence or daily classes.

Explore the Second Chance Programme, launched by the Minister of Basic Education in 2015. This initiative aids learners rewriting matric subjects in February and March by delivering face-to-face tuition, broadcasting support, printed resources, and internet-based options.
