Driver shows the difference between ANC and DA sections of Bloukrans Pass
A famous river pass linking the Western and Eastern Cape appears to tell two very stories, according to this driver.
The Bloukrans Pass is a scenic pass through the ravine of the Bloukrans river on the R102 road between Plettenberg Bay and Jeffreys Bay.
The Bloukrans river forms the boundary between the Western Cape and Eastern Cape provinces. After undergoing significant repairs, the pass has officially reopened on the Western Cape side.

A TALE OF TWO ROADS
The ANC-run Eastern Cape side however tells a different story.
The owner of The Diesel Channel uploaded a video of what one would see if they were to take a drive through this iconic pass in 2024. Watch:
The Western Cape province is governed by the Democratic Alliance (DA) – the official opposition to South Africa’s leading party, the African National Congress (ANC).
In recent times, the Bloukrans Pass faced the effects of time and the elements, which led to the deterioration of its infrastructure.

As safety concerns arose, the need for repairs became evident. This prompted authorities to take action to ensure the Pass’s longevity and continued use.
The R110 million upgrade included asphalt resurfacing, slip failure repairs and a new culvert at Whiskey Creek.

DRIVERS WARNED ABOUT SAFETY ON EASTERN CAPE PASS
A note on Meet Western Cape highlights the following:
The beauty and history of the pass, unfortunately, remain underappreciated by the Eastern Cape Government. The pass, while boasting a well-maintained Western Cape side, presents challenges on the Eastern Cape side due to neglect, resulting in poor conditions.

Drivers are advised against navigating the pass with a sedan, as only a 4×4 or a high clearance pickup can effectively negotiate the large heap of gravel situated at the eastern end, near the Rugbos Picnic site close to Coldstream. Signage indicates that the pass is closed, highlighting the need for caution in this area.
