South African pride: Tyla named ‘Rookie of the Month’ by Billboard
South African singer Tyla has just scored another major title after being named Billboard’s Rookie of the month.
As if Tyla’s success wasn’t already apparent, the 21-year-old singer has just been recognised as Billboard’s “Rookie of the Month” in the USA.

October 2023 was an extremely exciting month in Tyla’s journey, which saw her perform on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, gain millions of views and YouTube and even get an Instagram follow from Canadian rapper, Drake. Now she’s reached another massive landmark by scooping one of the most coveted titles as an up and coming musician.
TYLA THRILLED TO BE MAKING IT IN AMERICA
Every month, Billboard magazine chooses an artist to name as their “Rookie of the Month” in a key genre to highlight the promise they pose to the industry. As October came to an end, they named Water hitmaker, Tyla, as the R&B and Hip Hop “Rookie” adding fuel to an already blazing young career.

The young singer was profiled by the publication and explained that she had always dreamed of making it in the States. She said, “It’s crazy just being a normal girl in South Africa, and then living this dream that I’ve always wanted to live, I used to be so jealous watching all of the American celebrities on TV, like the Kardashians, Adele, Rihanna, Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj. I was like, ‘One day, I’m gonna be there.’

‘I DID NOT KNOW IT COULD HAPPEN FOR US’
The singer has also seen her breakout single, Water ranking well on several of Billboard’s chart including their famous Hot 100.
Speaking about her achievements in recent months and adding to her success in America, she added, “I actually used to want to be born in America only because I thought only Americans could be famous. I did not know it could happen for us because it didn’t really happen very often for people in Africa and especially South Africa.”
