More than 5 million gold cards have been issued to grant recipients as the main way of collecting their social grant. Gold cards will stop working by year-end, which means that recipients should replace their cards – or find payment alternatives.
Here’s what to know if YOU are still using your gold social grant card.
SASSA to replace ALL gold cards
The SASSA gold card works just like a regular bank card.
Gold cards automatically receive social grant payments on the stipulated date. Cards can be used at a retailer or ATM, just like any other card issued by a bank.
Unfortunately, all gold cards will have to be replaced this year.
Grants paid from December will require another payment method, or an alternative bank account.
WHEN DO SASSA GOLD CARDS EXPIRE?
According to official details, gold cards will expire from 31 December, 2023.
Payments will no longer move to your account, and cards will become inactive. Social grants from January 2024 must be collected by another means, or replace your gold card if you would like to stick to this payment system.
Grants can still be collected from regional offices and retailers.

If you don’t want to keep using your SASSA card, you are advised to list another payment method on the social grant system. Contact head office or visit a regional location for help with this step.
