Derick Hougaard: Tell-all book about addiction and finances

A tell-all book about Derick Hougaard titled ‘Derick Hougaard: Die ware storie van die Liefling van Loftus’ is set to come out this October.

The book named Derick Hougaard: Die ware storie van die Liefling van Loftus, is set to be released this month – it documents untold stories of former rugby star Derick Hougaard’s life on and off the sports field and how his confidants and friends tried curbing his addiction.

A BRIEF DIVE INTO DERICK HOUGAARD’S HEALTH AND CAREER

Earlier this year, the former South African flyhalf was rushed to the Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria hospital where he is said to have spent three weeks in the Intensive Care Unit allegedly battling respiratory pneumonia. He was reportedly placed in a medically induced coma for 13 days and allegedly given a 50/50 chance of survival, the Citizen reported.

He previously did an interview on Jacaranda FM’s The Drive with Rob & Roz show and is said to have opened up about his girlfriend, pop singer Nadiné allegedly finding him unconscious at his home.

He reportedly explained that he had taken his usual dose of medication (Dopaquel, Trazodone, and Opioids) but did wake up the next day. The medication he took is said to treat both anxiety and manic episodes, depression, and insomnia.

MORE ABOUT THE BOOK

Derick Hougaard was on his way up before his career came to an abrupt end in 2015 following his alleged addiction to prescription medication. According to NB Publishers, at just 19 years old he won the Currie Cup in the final for the Blue Bulls rugby team and broke the legend, Naas Botha’s kicking record.

The book written about his life was written by rugby writer Brendan Nel is said to explore the thin line between success and failure, from Hougaard’s career, sports injuries, addiction, and personal finances, to numerous challenges that he also faced in his marriage to the Afrikaans popstar, Karlien van Jaarsveld.
