‘Dr Matthew Lani’ allegedly lying about being a doctor
The University of Witwatersrand has demanded that‘doctor’ Matthew Lani retract claims that he got his qualification from the institution.
South African social media users have been buzzing about a popular TikToker who goes by Dr Matthew Lani on the app. Dr Matthew has amassed thousands of followers with his medical content and claims that he became a doctor when he was only 21 after graduating from the University of Witwatersrand (Wits). Social media users have been poking holes in his story all day and are now convinced that he has been lying about his qualifications all along.
Hundreds if not thousands of South Africans are now invested in the story and were left shocked after Wits issued a statement demanding he stop spreading false information about having attended the school.

It would appear that Dr Matthew’s ruse is finally up.
Over the last couple of years, he has built himself quite the online presence after first introducing himself as a young doctor who goes by Dr Matthew Lani.
On his platform, he offered all kinds of advice ranging from skincare to health care.
Many became suspicious of him after he shared that he didn’t matriculate but rather attended Cambridge University on a scholarship where he graduated at only 16.
He then said that he went on to study at the University of Witwatersrand where he obtained his Bachelor of Medicine.

On Sunday evening, many started badgering to share proof of his claims but all they got were bizarre TikTok videos of him insisting he is a Wits qualified doctor.
In one clip, he even claimed that the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) had called him to make a video clearing the air after his name was not found on their database.

WITS DEMANDS THE CLAIMS BE REMOVED
And now the final bit of proof that he has been pulling wool over everyone’s heads was shared by Wits themselves.
In a statement, the university denied having a student named Matthew Bongani Zingelwa or Sanele Zingelwa at the institution.
“Following claims made by “Dr Matthew Lani” on social media and based on the facts at hand, Wits cannot find any person who graduated by the name of Matthew Bongani Zingelwa or Sanele Zingelwa in recent years,” reads the statement.
