Gearing up for a big weekend braai? We’ve got you sorted for the best prices from South Africa’s major supermarkets. That’s right, from meat to braai essentials, let’s make sure your weekend braai doesn’t break the bank before the new month starts.

We’ve been tracking prices of braai essentials for the last few weeks to give you the best weekend braai informations. We’ve only looked at Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay and Woolworths so far. But, after hearing your feedback, we’re happy to note that we’ll soon be adding Food Lover’s Markets Market and Makro. For the last weekend of September, here’s how your weekend stacks up …

As you can see, Shoprite comes out tops in a comparison of prices for your weekend braai. It’s still markedly in front. Checkers weekend braai basket prices have actually increased. Pick n Pay’s is more or less unmoved. And Woolworths has shaved a few Rands off thanks to competitive meat pricing.

GOOD NEWS: Increase for SASSA grants come into effect 1 October 2023

As before, Shoprite maintains top spot due to boerewors, garlic bread and lamb chops being the cheapest across the four supermarkets. Although, having said that, Shoprite is R21 more expensive than it was this time last week. It’s prices for lamb chops have increased to almost the level of Checkers.

In the last week of September 2023, there were price increases for lamb braai chops across the board, except at Woolworths were they’re R20 cheaper per kilogram. Checkers prices have gone up, and very nearly rival Pick n Pay now. For the rest, the weekend braai prices are stable.
