SASSA payment crisis: DA files SAHRC complaint

The Democratic Alliance stormed into the SAHRC office in Johannesburg,in response to the recent SASSA payment debacles, stating that valueable citizens are being left alone.

Alleging urgent concerns for vulnerable citizens, the Democratic Alliance stormed into the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) office in Johannesburg,in response to the recent SASSA payment debacles.

Bridget Masango MP, the DA Shadow Minister of Social Development, along with Refiloe Nt’sekhe MPL and Bronwynn Engelbrecht MPL, urgently lodged a complaint at the SAHRC office in Johannesburg.

They accused Minister Lindiwe Zulu, the Department of Social Development, SASSA, and Postbank of contributing to persistent issues in social grant payments.

SASSA PAYMENT:DA FILES COMPLAINT AGAINST PAYMENT CRISIS

Bridget Masango stated, “Our SAHRC complaint rests on the fundamental principles in the South African Constitution, which firmly safeguard citizens’ rights and dignity. The core concerns in our grievance include:”

  • Section 10 – The right to human dignity: Delayed grant payments have plunged the poorest among us into profound suffering, impacting their dignity significantly.
  • Section 11 – The right to life: Delays in accessing funds for food and medicine have placed the lives of grant recipients at risk, leaving them vulnerable to malnutrition and illness.
  • Section 27 – The right to healthcare, food, water, and social security: The failure to ensure timely payments directly infringes upon the rights of citizens to social security, significantly impacting their ability to afford essential food and healthcare.
  • Section 28 – The rights of children: Grant payment failures disproportionately affect children, compromising their right to nutrition, shelter, basic health services, and social services.

“The continuous SASSA grant payment crisis has exposed the Department of Social Development’s inability to tackle these urgent problems.

It’s clear that Minister Lindiwe Zulu and her department are facing difficulties in delivering the care and support needed by our society’s most vulnerable members.”

Bridget Masango stressed, “The DA insists that responsible, compassionate, and dedicated governance is crucial for creating significant improvements.”
