RENEWAL: CHEAPEST PROVINCE

BusinessTech reveals which of South Africa’s nine provinces from Limpopo to Western Cape offer the cheapest car licence renewal fees.

The publication reveals that Limpopo has the cheapest renewal fees for almost every weight class, costing R323 for the average hatchback and R945 for heavy SUVs such as a Toyota Land Cruiser.

This means the province offers R133 and R351 cheaper than KwaZulu-Natal, which is the most expensive province for all types of vehicles.

The second cheapest is Westen Cape, followed by the North West in third, while Gauteng has been named the second most expensive, followed by the Eastern Cape.

South African motorists are usually given 21 days grace-period to renew an expired car licence and a late renewal 10% penalty fee applies after this time.

CAR LICENCE EXPIRE

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) revealed earlier this month that over 1 million licences are set to expire in September and warned that South African motorists will be penalised if they don’t renew on time.

The RTMC added that several extensions granted during the Covid-19 pandemic have resulted in a significant build-up of pending licence renewals, which now fall between August and December.

“As a result, (over a million) motor vehicle licences are expiring (in September) and must be renewed by the end of the month.”

South African motorists have to renew their car licences annually. Motorists will receive SMS’ and emails reminders to renew motor vehicle licences that are expiring every month.
