The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA)  has laid criminal charges against Economic Freedom Fighters (EF) leader Julius Malema in accordance with the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962 after a video of him slaughtering a cow went viral.

Malema received backlash after attempting to slaughter a cow in Magaliesberg as the party celebrated ten years in August.

NSPCA LAYS CHARGES AGAINST MALEMA

In the video, Malema attempted to slaughter a cow but struggled at length after using a knife that caused the animal deep distress. The public and animal activists argued that Malema’s actions were inhumane.

The NSPCA said it is evident from the video that Malema uses two small knives and inflicts more than 11 stabs and over 60 instances of twisting the knife into the fully conscious animal’s poll. Malema repeatedly inflicted pain and caused unnecessary suffering to the animal and it is evident that the animal endured significant distress.

Following calls from the public, the NSPCA has since laid a criminal charge against the EFF leader in accordance with the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.

The animal welfare organisation said the Act is a crucial piece of legislation that aims to protect all animals from unnecessary pain, suffering, and cruelty. It is essential that all individuals, including public figures and leaders, who are expected to set an example, uphold and respect these laws.

“After a thorough investigation into the contraventions depicted in the video, the NSPCA has laid criminal charges against Mr Malema in accordance with the Act. The NSPCA will work closely with law enforcement and the Prosecuting Authority to ensure a comprehensive investigation and prosecution of the case.

“The NSPCA has consistently demonstrated its dedication to protecting and advocating for the welfare of animals across our nation. It is crucial that those who inflict harm upon animals are held accountable for their actions, as this sends a clear message that animal cruelty will not be tolerated in our society,” NSPCA spokesperson Jacques Peacock said.
